Inhaled Insulin; Medical Breakthrough for Diabetes
Patients

For the first time in 80 years, a new medical development in insulin administration
will allow
type 1 and type 2 adult diabetics to get their dose of insulin a very different
way.

Recently approved by the FDA and the first one of its kind, Exubera is a rapid-
acting, meal time insulin that can be inhaled through the mouth.  Although shots of
long acting insulin may still be needed, Exubera will make the hassle of administering
insulin on a daily basis a lot simpler and it will help diabetics keep their blood glucose
levels under control.

Should I Use Exubera?

If you smoke, have recently quit smoking (within 6 months), have lung disease
(bronchitis, asthma, emphysema) you should not take Exubera.  The product is not
available for children under 18, as more testing is being done.

Let your doctor know about all the prescription and over the counter medications
that you use before beginning treatment with Exubera.  Other medications could
interfere with the effects of this product.

How Should I Take Exubera?

Exubera comes in powdered form.  A blister pack is inserted into the inhaler, which
releases the insulin from the pack and is inhaled by taking a normal breath through
the mouth.  It should be taken 10 minutes before a meal.

Your healthcare provider will be able to fully train you on using the inhaler and
administering the insulin.  Make sure you follow the instructions completely.

What Are the Side Effects?

Hypoglycemia (low blood glucose) is the most common side effect of Exubera.
Other side effects include:

•        Decrease in lung capacity

•        Cough, sore throat

•        Dry mouth

•        Chest discomfort

•        Ear pain

If these or any other unusual side effects occur, consult your doctor immediately
